Government Shutdown Enters Week Three Amid Capitol Gridlock
As the U.S. government shutdown drags into its third week, political tensions in Washington have reached a breaking point. House Speaker Mike Johnson says Democrats are “playing politics with people’s paychecks” and deliberately prolonging the crisis to make a spectacle out of the upcoming “No Kings Rally” in Washington, D.C.
“What Barack Obama demanded then is exactly what Republicans are saying now,” Johnson argued, referencing Obama’s 2013 comments urging lawmakers to pass a clean funding bill without “partisan ransom.”
Johnson says today’s Democrats have reversed their stance, holding out to appease what he calls “a radical, vocal base” that wants the shutdown to continue until after the anti-Trump rally scheduled this weekend.
Emmer Blasts the Cost of the Stalemate
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) condemned the ongoing standoff, calling it “ridiculous” and “deeply damaging to working Americans.”
“It costs the American people $400 million a day for this shutdown,” Emmer told Fox Business. “The Trump administration figured out how to pay our troops and the Coast Guard, but this can’t go on. It’s time to reopen the government.”
He accused Democrats of using the shutdown as a political weapon: “They’re not taking me hostage—they’re taking the American people hostage.”
Emmer added that the current Democratic Party has “become unrecognizable,” saying it now caters to “the most radical and violent base in the country” instead of listening to Main Street Americans.
Political Calculations and Future Uncertainty
Sources say Democratic leadership believes ending the shutdown before the No Kings Rally could cause backlash from far-left activists who want to use the shutdown as leverage against Republicans and the Trump administration.
Even if a short-term continuing resolution passes, Emmer doubts the stability it would bring. “You can’t predict what they’ll do next,” he warned. “They’ll take the country hostage again the moment it suits them politically.”
With the federal government shuttered, tens of thousands of workers are furloughed, and more layoffs are expected if the impasse continues. The Office of Management and Budget estimates over 4,000 federal terminations may occur within days.
‘The Party of Yesterday Is Over’
Emmer believes the crisis is exposing deep fractures within the Democratic Party. “The Democrat Party of yesterday is headed to the ash heap of history,” he said. “It’s time they start listening to the American people who said loud and clear last November—they’ve had enough.”
As the Senate prepares for its eighth vote to reopen the government, both sides remain entrenched. What was once a policy dispute has become a symbolic standoff—one that’s costing taxpayers hundreds of millions daily while leaving the nation’s workers caught in the crossfire.
