FBI Director Disputes Sheriff’s Claims Over Federal Role in Missing Persons Case

FBI Director Kash Patel is pushing back against criticism surrounding the federal response to the high-profile Guthrie missing persons investigation, arguing that the FBI offered its full support from the outset but was not given immediate access to critical evidence. Speaking during an interview with Sean Hannity, Patel said earlier federal involvement could have accelerated the investigation and preserved valuable digital evidence that was later lost.

The Guthrie case, which remains under state jurisdiction, has become the subject of public debate following claims about when and how the FBI became involved. Patel disputed suggestions that the bureau was slow to respond, maintaining that federal investigators were prepared to assist from the first day they were contacted.

Patel Says FBI Offered Advanced Resources Immediately

According to Patel, the FBI routinely supports state and local authorities in missing persons investigations while respecting their primary jurisdiction over such cases. He said the bureau immediately offered access to its forensic capabilities, including DNA testing at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia.

Instead, Patel said local officials chose to send DNA evidence to a private laboratory, a decision he said resulted in approximately six weeks of additional processing time. He argued that using the FBI’s forensic resources from the beginning could have sped up portions of the investigation.

Patel also stated that federal investigators eventually secured key digital evidence through collaboration with private-sector partners, including Google. Among the evidence was Ring doorbell footage that allegedly showed an individual attempting to cover a security camera, which Patel described as one of the investigation’s most significant breakthroughs.

Delayed Access Limited Recovery of Digital Evidence

While discussing the investigation, Patel said the FBI’s delayed access to surveillance data reduced investigators’ ability to recover additional evidence. According to him, some footage had already been automatically deleted because the associated Ring account did not have a subscription service that preserved older recordings.

Patel said earlier access to the digital evidence could have allowed investigators to retrieve more information before it was permanently erased. He emphasized that although the FBI stood ready to assist, local authorities retained full control over the investigation and its direction.

FBI Director Highlights Broader Law Enforcement Initiatives

During the same interview, Patel also outlined several nationwide initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime and combating international fraud networks.

He credited increased federal support for law enforcement with improvements in crime reduction efforts, saying the FBI arrested approximately 44,000 violent offenders while reporting nearly one million fewer violent crime incidents in 2025 compared with the previous year. Patel attributed those results to expanded resources and closer cooperation among federal, state, and international law enforcement agencies.

Operation Blackout Targets International Scam Compounds

Patel devoted considerable attention to Operation Blackout, an FBI-led international campaign targeting organized cybercrime groups responsible for large-scale online scams.

According to Patel, the operation involved close cooperation with law enforcement agencies across Southeast Asia and the Middle East. He said investigators dismantled four major scam compounds, rescued thousands of trafficking victims, and disrupted criminal operations that had allegedly stolen billions of dollars from victims worldwide.

Patel also said authorities shut down approximately 8,000 internet terminals used by the criminal organizations, significantly disrupting their ability to conduct online fraud schemes. He described the scam compounds as sophisticated operations involved in romance scams, phishing attacks, telephone fraud, and other financial crimes targeting individuals across multiple countries.

Operation Level Up Aims to Protect Americans From Fraud

Patel also discussed Operation Level Up, an FBI initiative designed to identify potential scam victims before they suffer financial losses.

According to Patel, the bureau proactively contacted roughly 10,000 Americans believed to be targeted by scammers, preventing more than $550 million in losses. He encouraged the public to remain cautious when receiving unexpected phone calls, emails, or online requests for money and advised anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to contact the FBI immediately.

International Partnerships Continue to Expand

Patel said combating sophisticated cybercrime requires extensive international cooperation. He noted that representatives from 24 countries and hundreds of law enforcement officials recently participated in a summit focused on disrupting transnational scam operations and strengthening cross-border investigations.

As discussion surrounding the Guthrie investigation continues, Patel maintained that the FBI remains committed to supporting state and local agencies whenever requested while expanding efforts to combat violent crime, cyber fraud, and organized criminal networks operating around the world. He said early cooperation between local authorities and federal investigators remains essential to preserving evidence and improving investigative outcomes.
